Refrigeration is a big energy expense for many businesses, such as restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores. Unfortunately, a large portion of the energy dollars spent on refrigeration often ends up going out the door, literally. Air escaping through doors in cold storage equipment can really cost you. Here are some measures you can implement to put a stop to this energy waste.
Ensure a tight seal
Gaskets form a seal when the refrigeration unit door is closed, blocking outside air. Without a tight seal, cold air can escape, forcing the unit to work harder to keep food at safe temperatures, which not only wastes energy but can also cause food spoilage.
Clean gaskets regularly. Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth to clean the seals, especially in corners where dirt tends to build up. Make sure they are completely dry.
Check for any visible signs of wear or damage, such as gaps, cracks or brittleness. Frost buildup or condensation around door edges can also be signs of worn gaskets. Replacing worn gaskets can cut energy costs considerably while helping preserve refrigerator or freezer content
Maintain hinges
The doors on your refrigeration unit are heavy, and they are typically opened and closed many times a day. This extensive use of doors can put a lot of stress on the hinges. Loose hinges can keep the door from closing and sealing properly. Inspect hinges regularly and repair or replace them as needed.
Install automatic closers
Employees can easily open a cooler or freezer and neglect to close it completely. An automatic closer ensures the door closes quickly and stays shut, minimizing the time the door is open. These closers are often hydraulic and mount to the top of the door and frame, actively pulling the door to a closed position.
Add strip curtains
No matter what you do, the refrigeration unit has to be open sometimes for loading, unloading or other tasks. A lot of cold air can escape while the door is open. Strip curtains can significantly reduce this energy loss while allowing employees to come and go easily. Strip curtain door kits include durable PVC vinyl strips and universal mounting hardware for easy installation. Measure the door opening and trim any excess length to ensure a proper fit.
Switch to LED door lights
In refrigerated display cases, door lights are often overlooked as an energy efficiency opportunity. LEDs are much more efficient than conventional fluorescent lamps, and they last longer. LEDs also emit less heat, reducing the strain on your refrigeration system. As an added bonus, LEDs provide better light quality, enhancing product visibility.
