LADWP strives to help our young people and all of our customers use electricity safely. Our efforts include information on safety through our bill insert newsletter Connections and brochures. Responding to teachers and student needs during Covid-19, LADWP is expanding its electric safety resources virtually and digitally.

This semester we added five new short electric safety videos in which elementary and middle school students present important tips. These videos are also accessed through e-SMARTkids link on this page. Additional information has also been updated on the e-SMARTkids kids website link accessed on this page.

In addition, the Emmy Award-Winning video that LADWP produced with Channel 35, “Outdoor Electric Safety” can also be viewed from this website.

Beginning in February it is expected that three electric safety titles, “Mouse House Surprise,” “Sam and Jody Save the Circus,” and ”Paths for Electricity” will be available in digital editions. These titles will also be available in print in 2021 upon teacher request. Elementary schools will receive email invitations to request lessons digitally or in print.

Electric Safety Program Details

Prior to Covid-19, LADWP annually offered elementary teachers the opportunity to order sets of printed classroom lesson materials. The offer, which included printed “Paths for Electricity,” lessons comprised of student books, a teacher’s guide, poster, kit and the video "Outdoor Electric Safety," was distributed in a mailing to schools within the City of Los Angeles. “Paths for Electricity" is provided to elementary schools for grades 4-6.

"Mouse House Surprise,” lesson package for grades K-1, was offered, included a big book for the teacher, a teacher’s guide, a booklet to go home to parents and a student book. This program provides basic safety lessons for students in these two beginning elementary grades.

For grades 2-3, “Sam and Jody Save the Circus,” includes a teacher’s guide, student books and a sticker. This lesson package helps students improve their writing skills in addition to learning about electric safety.
