LADWP has greatly expanded our career education outreach programs because we want our local students to become aware of future opportunities at our utility, city government and our community at large and how they can prepare for these opportunities in the future.
Here are ways that LADWP is involved in helping students learn more about careers:
Pathful Connect Career Industry Chats and Classroom Presentations
LADWP sponsors live and then recorded virtual industry chats by our employees in a variety of careers such as engineering, science, skilled craft trade and environmental fields.
Through Pathful Connect, our employees also respond to requests from individual teachers to make presentations to their specific classes.
Pathful Connect has more than 18,000 recorded career industry chats on its Virtual Library in a huge variety of career classifications.

Career Paths

LADWP Women in Skilled Craft Trades

Career Event Sponsorships and Speakers
During the school year, we sponsor and arrange for our employees to speak with students during several career education events coordinated with non-profit partners and educational institutions as follows:
- GPS, a career education event for 10th grade high school students, is held in the fall with the non-profit organization, EXP;
- USC MESA Day in the fall and Parent Engagement Series during the year;
- Women in STEM event in February with EXP for high school women students;
- Engineers’ Week: several events are held on specific days for elementary, middle, and high school students. Special days are also allocated specifically for girls and Girls Scouts through the American Society of Civil Engineers Los Angeles Younger Member Forum, annually in late February;
- LAunchPad, a summer two-week intensive STEM program, for high school women to learn about studies and careers in these fields with California State University Los Angeles’ College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology
Adopt-A-School Program Expansion CTE Partnerships
We have expanded our Adopt-A-School Program to work with Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs at Fremont High School in Engineering, Theodore Roosevelt High School’s STEAM Academy and Cybersecurity Program and Sotomayor High School’s Solar Photovoltaic CTE Program.
Career Days
LADWP employees annually share their backgrounds, experience and their work with students during Career Day events at local schools all around the city through the Adopt-A-School Program or through the Department’s Speakers’ Bureau. These presentations are mainly now held virtually. Learn more and/or to schedule a speaker.
Water, Energy and Education Alliance (WEEA)
A consortium of about 50 organizations in Southern California, including water and electric utilities, school districts, county education office, community colleges and non-profit organizations was established by the California Environmental Education Foundation (CEEF) in 2018 to enhance school to work pathways. LADWP and the Metropolitan Water District were the original sponsors of WEEA. Now managed by the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC), WEEA is partnering with the Center of Excellence, a research organization affiliated with the California Community Colleges, to develop a year-long statewide study of future opportunities in 10 job classifications among water and also wastewater utilities.
