Project Description

The Valley-Toluca Tower and Transmission Line Upgrade will replace 13.8 circuit miles of transmission line that was first put in service in 1954 and last upgraded in 1974. The project will also raise 10 transmission towers and 2 towers will be replaced by new towers in the Valley Toluca Corridor that runs along an LADWP power line easement in the San Fernando Valley.

There are two phases of construction that will increase the capacity of the transmission lines from 495 megawatts to 1,100 megawatts. Phase I, which is scheduled to start in Fall 2018 and be complete in Spring 2019, includes constructing foundations for two new towers and permanently raising 10 towers by a height of 25 feet. Re-conductoring work of some segments of the line will start.

Phase II is scheduled to start in Fall 2019 and be complete be Spring 2020. This work includes permanently replacing two existing towers with new towers, as well as completing the re-conductoring work.

The re-conductoring work will start at Valley Generating Station and continue southwest along Truesdale Street to Canterbury Avenue. The construction route will then turn southeast to the 170 Hollywood Freeway, continue southeast and terminate at Toluca Receiving Station by Cahuenga Boulevard and Whitnall Highway.

Project Benefits

  • Provides LADWP with more flexibility to use larger amounts of energy generated from renewable sources
  • Improve power system reliability
  • Ensure compliance with State regulations
  • Reduces long term maintenance and replacement costs

Construction Hours

All construction work is scheduled from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Construction to raise towers will be done on the weekends. Construction near freeway crossings may require overnight weekend work.
