Valley Generating Station (VGS), located in the Sun Valley community, is one of four in-basin natural gas fueled power plants. It has a capacity to generate 576 MW, about 6% of the City’s total power generation capacity.

In early 2000, new efficient units were constructed and put into service, and the old units and stacks were taken out of service. The new efficient units can start up in about 10 minutes.

Units 1-4 are no longer in service and will be demolished in 2023.
Units 1-4 were taken out of service in 2002 and demolition is scheduled to begin in 2024.
Units 5-8, put into service in 2002, are newer and much more efficient.

The plant is also home to LADWP’s Health & Safety Office and Joint Safety and Training Programs. Approximately 300 employees report to VGS daily.

Construction Activities

Units 1-4 Demolition

LADWP plans to begin demolition of the old generating units, Units 1–4, in 2024. Also included in the demolition plans are structures and systems associated with Units 1-4, the bearing cooling tower foundation, skim pond, and four concrete foundations of previously demolished cooling towers.

Once the project area is cleared, the space will be available land for installation of future renewable energy projects (refer to Future Plans below). The need, timing, and nature of any future projects at VGS will be subject to additional environmental review prior to any approvals or implementation.

Demolition Construction Schedule: April 2024 – November 2026

Valley Generating Station’s Open-Path Methane Monitoring System

LADWP is currently monitoring methane at VGS using laser-based Boreal GasFinder3-DC monitors. These open-path gas detection monitors continuously monitor and measure gas concentrations over the entire path of the laser, providing real-time ambient methane concentration readings in parts per million (ppm). Weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed, and direction are available on the map as well. Clicking on a data point will display a table of the monitor readings in five-minute averages over the last 24 hours.

Monitoring map works best with Google Chrome and Firefox. Viewing map with Internet Explorer is not recommended.

For any questions or concerns, please email [email protected].

Historical Monitoring Data

Prior to the installation of the laser-based Boreal GasFinder3-DC monitors, LADWP’s Corporate
Health and Safety Division conducted daily measurements of methane concentrations at VGS using
a GASMET infrared gas analyzer (GASMET). The historical GASMET measurements of methane
concentrations taken along the perimeter of the plant are posted below.

Future Plans

As we transition to a clean energy future, LADWP is moving toward 100% carbon neutrality. There are transmission line upgrades currently underway and more to come.

Additionally, with the demolition of Units 1 -4 (refer to Construction Activities above), we’re opening up approximately 12 acres of space for future clean energy projects.
