The River Supply Conduit (RSC) Improvement Upper Reach Unit 7 Project consists of installing 13,325 linear-feet of 78-inch diameter welded steel pipeline primarily within a tunnel. The project is located in the Burbank area. The tunnel begins at Johnny Carson Park South, located south of the 134 Freeway in Burbank and continues northwest under Whitnall Highway to join RSC Unit 6 near Biloxi Avenue and West Burbank Boulevard.
Micro-tunneling will be used for a short section starting at Forest Lawn Drive under the L.A. River and will join with the tunnel at Johnny Carson Park South. A short open trench section will connect RSC Unit 7 with RSC Unit 6. Another open trench section will connect RSC Unit 7 with a pipeline at the Headworks Reservoir Facility.
Project Background
The existing River Supply Conduit is a major transmission pipeline built in the 1940’s. The RSC transports water from the Northeast Valley area to the Central City area. Approximately 30,000 linear feet of the RSC that runs between North Hollywood Pump Station and the Headworks Reservoir in Griffith Park will be replaced with a larger diameter steel pipe. This stretch is referred to as the RSC Upper Reach and will be constructed under two separate projects. These projects are the recently completed RSC Units 5 & 6 project and RSC Unit 7. Replacement of the RSC is necessary to:
- Meet with State regulatory requirements for higher water operating pressures.
- Increase capacity to accommodate future demand.
- Allow greater operational flexibility and improved system reliability.
