Book drive students
LADWP employee volunteers sponsor an ongoing book drive for one of the Adopt-A-Schools, Union Avenue School. Most the volunteers coordinating the book drive go to the school every other week to help students with their reading skills

LADWP has had a longstanding educational partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for more than 40 years.

Programs include:

  • LADWP Science Bowl:  LADWP is the regional coordinating sponsor and host for Science Bowl open to public, charter, private and parochial high schools within the boundaries of LAUSD;
  • The Department and our employees have adopted 24 schools;
  • An annual Electric Safety classroom lesson material program is offered to all elementary schools located with the LADWP service area, including most of the San Fernando Valley and Eastern Sierra areas. This program consists of three different lessons covering grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-6.
  • LADWP has hosted a series of LAUSD student Academic Decathlon training workshops;
  • LADWP is sponsoring scholarships and medals honoring student participants in the LAUSD Academic Decathlon workshops;
  • LADWP is sponsoring education outreach programs by providing grants to several non-profit organizations;   
  • Employee speakers visit classrooms to discuss a variety of Department related topics ranging from local water supply sources and conservation to renewable energy;

Water quality testing
A science teacher from Foshay Learning Center in South LA, conducts a water quality test as part of a workshop at LADWP headquarters and incorporating use of a new iPad app developed by Caltech. The workshop was co-sponsored by LADWP, Metropolitan Water District and Caltech affiliated Comunity Service Academy.
Scholarship winners
Four students were awarded scholarships by LADWP for their exceptional leadership abilities during the seven-session LAUSD Academic Decathlon High Intellectual Preparedness Program (HIPP) workshops held at the Department's downtown headquarters in fall 2017.
