Residential Shade Tree Workshop

The First P: Planning
continued

To identify your home’s underground infrastructure, call Dig Alert

  • Dig Alert is a free service
  • Call at least 2 days in advance
  • Local utilities will send crews to your home to mark sewer lines, water lines, gas lines, and electric and telephone lines.

Identify the locations where you plan to plant new shade trees around your home.

In summary, keep in mind:

  • Distances from home’s foundation
  • Orientation to north
  • Strategic shading of windows, doors, and air conditioning units
  • Existing hardscape features
  • Distance from fences and property walls
  • Existing utilities and other infrastructure (overhead, rooftop, and underground)
  • Location of existing landscape features (trees, flower beds, etc.)

Consider “framing” your home so that you do not block the entire front of your home, but instead place your new trees in strategic locations that “accent” or “frame” your home. At this time, you will want to identify your proposed locations and possible size restrictions. Remember that for the south side, pick a deciduous tree that lets sunlight heat the home naturally in the winter months.
