Residential Shade Tree Workshop

The 3 P’s for Shade

For the best chance of success with your trees, you need to go through three tasks, all equally important. We call them “the 3 P’s”: Planning, Planting, and Protecting.

  1. Planning requires knowing your property and what space you have, determining what areas you can most effectively shade, and then selecting the right trees.
  2. Planting involves following the proper steps to plant your trees, without causing damage, so the trees grow vigorously.
  3. Protecting your “natural air conditioners” (shade trees) requires ongoing care, including watering, staking, and pruning.

The First P: Planning

Identify your home’s features to ensure that you provide yourself with adequate space to plant any new trees you receive through the program. Include your:

  • Foundation, windows, doors, and outdoor A/C
  • Hardscape features (sidewalk, fences, driveway, patio, walls)
  • Overhead, rooftop, and underground infrastructure
  • Existing trees, landscape features, and tree planting zone
