LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is notifying customers in the San Fernando Valley that they may begin to experience an earthy or musty odor in their water supply. The odor is not a cause for health concern and is associated with seasonal algae growth in the Owens Valley. A strain of blue-green algae known as Anabaena produces the smelly compound which is harmless and common to water systems all over the world.

LADWP is closely monitoring the surge in algae growth and is relying on a series of treatments on the Los Angeles Aqueduct to bring the offensive algae into check. The City-owned aqueduct system is a key source of supply for Angelenos and is expected to meet about 60% of the City's water needs this year.

LADWP General Manager Ron Deaton stated, “We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers. We are committed to resolving the algae problem as quickly as possible.”
